Over the past two years at least 56 albino people in Burundi and Tanzania have been killed by hunters working for witchdoctors who sell their body parts as talismans for thousands of dollars. Tanzanian albinos live in fear of their lives In the past week, two Tanzanian albinos have been murdered for their limbs. Elizabeth Hussein, 13, was attacked by men with machetes and Ezekiel John, 47, had his arms and legs cut off after being shot. Their deaths bring the toll to 35 murders in just more than a year, the Independent reports There is similar violence against albinos throughout east and central Africa. The killings are orchestrated by witch doctors who claim they can make people rich using limbs and blood from their white-skinned neighbours. In some parts of the country, albino children go to school with bodyguards and the graves of albinos are piled with rocks to deter grave robbers, the paper said. Many albinos have fled the towns and cities to the remote island of Ukerewe where they can live in relative safety. The island is believed to have the highest concentration of albinos, or zeru, in the world Albinism is an inherited disorder. It derives from a congenital lack of the melanin pigment which protects the skin, eyes and hair from the sun's ultraviolet rays. Some have very poor vision, though not all have red eyes as myth often suggests. The Tanzanian Albino Society, funded by UK-based charity Action on Disability and Development, has been set up to fight discrimination against albinos in Africa. Legally Blind

For this video I captured footage of a very unique cat that lives with only one eye and then I filmed a friend of mine who lives with a similar problem in her human life. She is not only albino, but she is legally blind. I interviewed her about what it is like to be blind and to look different than other people. I think the physical relationship between the cat and the girl is very strong and it creates an interesting comparison. Through editting, I tried to show my subject matter in an effective manner. Albinos Plight

Robinson Mkwama Simiyu, the man who has been making headlines the past week after his Kenyan friend, Nathan Mutei, attempted to sell him in neighbouring Tanzania, is safely back in Kenya. Mkwama who arrived in the country late last night now says that Mutei should have been sentenced to hang instead of the 17 years imprisonment sentence for attempting to sell him off as a person with albinism. In almost all cases a significant visual impairment is also involved, with most persons with albinism being legally blind. Albinism is a rare genetic condition occurring in both genders regardless of ethnicity. In North America and Europe it is estimated that 1 in 20000 people have some form of albinism. In Tanzania however, it is 5 times as common with 1 in 4000 people being affected. The horror of a rapidly growing industry in the sale of albino body parts. This unimaginable evil is driven by the belief (in some areas of the country) that the bodyparts of people with albinism possess magical powers capable of bringing riches if used in potions produced by local witchdoctors. During the last year, official reports indicate that 43 people with albinism have been brutally murdered and their bodyparts hacked off and sold to witchdoctors. However, leaders in the albinism community believe the number of deaths to be between 60 and 70. Reports also indicate that albino bodyparts are being exported outside of Tanzania. In one instance, a Tanzanian trader was caught travelling to the Democratic Republic of the Congo with the head of an albino baby in his possession. He told police that a businessman there ...
