By albino eyes

In the past two years, at least 56 albinos in Burundi and Tanzania, the hunters who sell the medicine men for their body parts have been killed as talismans for thousands of dollars. The killings triggered a humanitarian crisis as thousands of albinos were either trapped in their villages, too scared to move to or abandoned guarded in the case of children in special schools for the disabled and shelters by the police. The spontaneous local humanitarian response to this need wascoordinated by the Red Cross societies of both countries. It sharply raised the long-term social and health problems of the Great Lakes albinos, especially skin cancer, succumbing to so many of them. More information: www.ifrc.org Year: 2009
