The Tragic Triumph of the Spirit Gorilla

When he was in the African country of Equatorial Guinea taken prisoner in 1966 (or '67 depending on the source), he was proclaimed a miracle by the villagers. But the real miracle was the fact that he managed to allow the ripe old age of 40 (80 years ago in the human).

His name was Snowflake and this is his story

Snowflake's first encounter with Lady Luck, when he, like an orphaned gorilla was discovered by a hunter. Whether the data are correct about his discovery, ornot, what is not called into question the good fortune that landed him in the hands of a Spanish scientist for the princely sum of sixty pounds.

Snowflake was suffering from a condition known as albinism (people with this condition are known as albinos), the person who is experiencing the pigment melanin deficiency. Albinos generally have very pale skin and are also very sensitive to the sun and light in general.

There are those who can not claim that it was unfortunate, asFortunately, that ultimately landed Snowflake in captivity, but the reality is, an albino gorilla would have virtually no chance of surviving in the wild. Not only Snowflake would have had to with the daily ravages of ultraviolet rays from the equatorial sun a lot, but because of his color, he would also have been a walking advertisement for food gorilla natural predators.

Okay, granted, gorillas have few predators other than humans, but they do exist, and the sources, one that is mainly in the sense thatLeopards. The white color of the hair (hair gorillas would not have made fur) Snowflake unmistakably just sneaked into the wild by a predator like a leopard on the ground that it was day or night.

Whatever the condition, history of its discovery is correct, it can suggest that Snowflake was ostracized and eventually abandoned by his gorilla group, including his mother. And why not! This scenario is not too far-fetched, if you are not about discrimination and ostracism from those who are different, evenIn this day and age, why should we expect radically different behavior of gorillas, which also happens to be one of our closest relatives goes as far as DNA.

As a colorless gorilla Put The Color Back Into Barcelona Zoo

Barcelona embraced Snowflake precisely as their own, or they just adored him! Known as Copito de Nieve in Spanish, Snowflake was early enough, the city Mascot and the overwhelming crowds at Barcelona Zoo. The young whiteGorilla on postcards, stamps and posters presented and was responsible for creating millions of tourists at the zoo.

But like everything affecting newfound fame Snowflake? Now, in his 37 years at the zoo, Snowflake father of 22 offspring (grandchildren included) in three women, regardless of gawking tourists. There is a lot of his dark face and seemingly irascible temperament, but still albinos suffer from extreme sensitivity to light and so-calledcharacteristic squint ... appear on the face of a gorilla as dark.

Also, it is no surprise that Snowflake was not very inclined to romp and romp in the sun for the entertainment of zoo visitors "... should get his condition largely prevented such tendencies.

And so what if Snowflake was not always open to the game of BE-nice-for-tourists. Want it? Feel would imagine, like you, if you were subjected to constant review, day-in day-out, by rude, ill -Manners hairless apes (humans).

Having said that, however, had Snowflake situation much worse when, in the wild, it is very unlikely that he would have survived for long remained. It was also at the time of Snowflake has been to Barcelona Zoo, introduced many misconceptions about gorilla life have been solved since.

It was due to such prevailing ignorance of gorillas, which were not long before gorillas in zoos on a diet of meat and fed and kept in solitary confinementCells. For a gregarious, vegetarian kind, such conditions, the torture!

Death Of A Star

Like any well-known celebrity, Snowflake's death in late 2003 caused a ripple on the Richter scale, and by the time the dust finally cleared, what remained was a city where one-in-mourning, and yet strangely divided. (Snowflake was euthanized because the symptoms of malignant melanoma (cancer) diagnosed in 2001 was to be increasingly painful ... besides, he waspretty old for a gorilla)

There are many of the claims, and felt that the zoo authorities flagrantly abused the sick gorilla on the wrong point of cruelty. The zoo authorities accept that only the citizens of Barcelona gave the chance for a final farewell to the famous sons of their excellent offerings. But left, like a hit movie oozing with potential continuation of the good people at the zoo nothing to chance.

Although none of the offspring Snowflake happened as albinosthe authorities were in the hope that a dominant variant of the gene (another albino gorilla) from the progeny gene pool to breed. It is not unreasonable to speculate that they hoped to appeal Snowflake superstar with a next-gen Ghost regain gorilla.
